Berta Fischer
From Sep 14, 2024 until fall 2025, C/O Berlin presents the Artistic Intervention by artist Berta Fischer at the Café C/O Berlin × Barkin'Kitchen at Amerika Haus, Hardenbergstraße 22-24, 10623 Berlin.
Berta Fischer, known for her radiant sculptural works, uses materials such as acrylic glass, PVC, and plastics to create luminous, organic forms. Her works are characterized by a playful lightness and transparency that make them appear almost immaterial. Often, the sculptures resemble fragile, flowing objects that engage in a dynamic dialogue with the surrounding space. The translucent materials Fischer uses to shape her works refract light in a fascinating way, causing colors and forms to shift depending on the viewer’s perspective. This interaction of light, space, and materiality is central to Fischer‘s artistic practice.
In the Artistic Intervention at C/O Berlin in Amerika Haus, organically inspired structures intertwine with the building’s architecture, whose glass and metal façade is emblematic of post-war modernism. This façade, representing rationality and stability, is poetically complemented and contrasted by Fischer’s delicate, biomorphic forms. The works evoke the historical significance of acrylic glass, which was first used for civilian purposes after World War II and soon became a symbol of technological progress and modernity. However, unlike the standardized material of that era, Fischer‘s sculptures are handcrafted, playful, and free from the rigidity of industrial production—a sculptural exploration of the undefined and a poetic commentary on the architecture of Amerika Haus.
In the year of C/O Berlin’s 25th anniversary, Fischer’s installation becomes a symbolic gesture that honors the building’s history and modernist legacy. Her works invite visitors to question the boundaries between materiality and immateriality, stability and instability. The precise forms of her sculptures, created through computer-controlled laser cutting and meticulous handcrafting, challenge established classifications and open up new perspectives on the relationship between art and space.
