FALL BREAK SPECIAL: Prologue / Epilogue

A photograph captures a single moment from a chain of moments, preserves it, and makes it timeless. But how did this moment come about, and what happened afterward? In this workshop, we’ll take a unique look behind the scenes: First, participants will take a close look at Carrie Mae Weems’ exhibition. After an introduction to the artist’s world—which grapples extensively with questions of cultural identity, patriarchy, and social belonging—they will select an image in small groups. They will then consider how the captured moment came about or what happened next. They will then document their own version of the story before or after the image in a video piece. No prior experience is necessary.

Greta Markurt works as a cinematographer in film and theater—preferably where the two blend, and where working processes and visual languages are rearranged. She has been involved in productions at the Berliner Ensemble, the Volksbühne, and the Deutsche Oper, as well as in numerous short films and music videos. She is currently shooting her first 90-minute experimental documentary, which gives physical form to the inner worlds of a group of young people in Nordhausen, Thuringia.

Pola Kapuste works visually with collages and stop-motion techniques and writes both journalism and fiction. Her work has been published in Das Wetter Magazin, Die Zeit, Der Spiegel, and fluter, among others. After spending a year reporting from Mexico as a freelance foreign correspondent, she now focuses primarily on film. As a screenwriter, director, and editor, she has found a way to combine language and imagery. Her third short film, MADONNAS, was created during a residency in Taranto, Italy, and screened at festivals in Paris, Beijing, and Ulaanbaatar, among others.
