The panel will explore new perspectives on the history of photography and discuss current approaches to the historiography of photography, as well as questions of materiality, infrastructure, and the hidden conditions of photographic image production. Followed by a Q&A session.
Michelle Henning is Professor in Photography and Media at the University of Liverpool, UK. She is an artist and writer, and has been writing on photography since the mid-1990s. Her two most recent books are Photography, The Unfettered Image (Routledge 2018) and A Dirty History of Photography: Chemistry, Fog and Empire (University of Chicago Press 2026).
Susanne Kriemann (b. 1972, Germany) is an artist and Professor of Code & Image at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. She has headed ABA AiR Berlin Alexanderplatz with Aleksander Komarov since 2010. Her works have been shown internationally at Wattis Institute, San Francisco; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris; C/O Berlin; and Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg. In addition, they have been shown at the 2nd Diriyah Biennale in Riyadh, the 11th Shanghai Biennale, the 10th and 11th Göteborg International Biennial, the 2nd Karachi Biennale, the 5th Moscow Biennale, and the 5th Berlin Biennale. She has published eighteen artist books since 1998.
Ryan Jeffery is a filmmaker and moving image artist interested in how technology, media, and political economy shape one another. The subjects of his work have ranged from the history of data centers, the financial industry’s collision with online meme culture, the private art collection of the World Trade Organization, and the recent turn in Silicon Valley to so-called “hard tech.”
Prof. Dr. Steffen Siegel has been professor for the theory and history of photography at Folkwang Folkwang University of the Arts since 2015. At Folkwang, he is the director of the MA and PhD programs for photo history. Since 2024, he has been the chairman of the Essen Center for Photography and an elected member of the North Rhine Westphalia Academy of Sciences and Arts.
