Many people are unaware that today’s Amerika Haus looks back on a past that was as glamorous as it was political. On the site where a magnificent late-19th-century villa once stood and witnessed a turbulent history, a new building emerged in the 1950s with a clear message: openness, democracy, and cultural exchange. Architect Bruno Grimmek designed a transparent structure that continues to reflect the political ideals of its era. Over the decades, the building became a stage for social change, cultural encounters, and political protest. Following a heritage-sensitive restoration that revealed key features of the original architecture, C/O Berlin moved into this historic building in 2014. Embracing its cultural legacy, the institution transformed it into Berlin’s leading center for photography.
