US documentary photographer and portraitist Mary Ellen Mark (1940–2015) is considered one of the foremost figures in photography. She turned her gaze on a variety of individuals from different backgrounds, whether activists, actors, or people on the fringes of society. Guided by humanist ideals, she always photographed with the same sensitivity, openness, and empathy for both personal projects and commissioned assignments. She pursued her stories worldwide, sometimes for weeks or years at a time, forming a deep connection to her subjects. Her photographs have been published in numerous internationally respected magazines and newspapers, and have won multiple awards.
In the Curator's Tour, Melissa Harris and Sophia Greiff (C/O Berlin Foundation), together with Martin Bell, Julia Bezgin, Meredith Lue (The Mary Ellen Mark Foundation), will guide visitors through the comprehensive retrospective of the outstanding photographer, which will feature well-known and obscure prints as well as rare archival materials such as contact sheets, letters, and notebooks.
