Mary Ellen Mark learned about the closed security unit for women at the Oregon State Hospital, Station 81, in early 1975 while photographing the production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. She requested to meet some of the women on the ward, and after a brief encounter, it became evident to her that their stories needed to be told. One year later, she photographed and interviewed these women on Station 81, alongside her friend, the writer and social scientist, Dr. Karen Folger Jacobs.

C/O Berlin presents "Ward 81 Voices," a captivating new documentary about Mark and Folger Jacob's experiences during their 36-day stay on the ward. Directed by the Oscar-nominated filmmaker Martin Bell, the film draws from audio recordings dating back to 1976 and features Mark's evocative photographs.
